London/New Delhi. India featured 54 universities in the QS World University Rankings 2026 — its best-ever showing, making it the fourth most-represented country after the US (191), the UK (90), and China (71).

IIT Delhi at 123rd

IIT Delhi led Indian institutions at 123rd globally, up from 150 in 2025. It was followed by IIT Bombay (129), IIT Madras (180), IIT Kharagpur (215), IISc Bangalore (219), and IIT Kanpur (222). All six are now in the global top 250.

IIT Madras's record leap

IIT Madras made the biggest jump — from 227 in 2025 to 180 in 2026, a 47-place gain. It reflects gains in research output and international research collaboration.

Rise of private universities

BITS Pilani (488), O.P. Jindal Global University (596), Manipal Academy of Higher Education, and Thapar Institute have broken into the top 600 for the first time.

Keys to improvement

48% of India's ranked universities improved year-on-year. Main drivers: stronger research output (especially in AI, climate science, and biotech), better international faculty ratios, and rising employer-recruitment scores.

NEP 2020 impact

The Education Minister credited the rankings to "the success of the National Education Policy 2020". NEP's push for institutional autonomy, higher research funding, and interdisciplinary programmes have contributed directly.

Challenges ahead

No Indian institution has yet entered the global top 100. MIT, Oxford, Cambridge, and Stanford dominate the top. The government has set a goal of placing three Indian institutions in the top 100 by 2030.
