New Delhi, May 3. The Union Health Ministry released the "Guidance Document on Diabetes Mellitus in Children" on May 3, 2026. It is the country's first national framework dedicated to managing diabetes in children aged 0-18.

From screening to management

The document covers all aspects of screening, diagnosis, treatment, and long-term management of diabetes in children. It carries clear protocols for both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes — until now absent from India's public health framework.

The "4Ts" awareness framework

The document promotes a "4Ts" framework for early detection of Type 1 diabetes: Toilet (frequent urination), Thirsty (excessive thirst), Tired (fatigue), and Thinner (unexplained weight loss). Recognising these signs lets parents seek medical help quickly.

Free care package

The free-of-cost care package at public health facilities includes lifelong insulin, glucometers, and test strips. This is a major relief for families of children with Type 1 diabetes, where lifelong care costs can run to ₹5-7 lakh.

India's growing concern

According to the International Diabetes Federation, India has approximately 230,000 children and adolescents with Type 1 diabetes — second only to China globally. Type 2 cases are also rising with obesity and lifestyle changes.

Unveiling at a summit

The document was unveiled at the National Summit on Best Practices in Public Healthcare Service Delivery. The Union Health Minister said, "We will not let our children carry the burden of the global diabetes epidemic — prevention and care are our priority."

Integration with Ayushman Bharat

According to central government sources, the diabetes care package will be integrated under Ayushman Bharat and the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), reaching up to 500 million beneficiaries.
