Geneva, May 20. The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the Ebola outbreak centred in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) a public health emergency of international concern.
Worrying numbers
According to the agency, the outbreak has so far claimed more than 130 lives and infected over 600 people. Given the fast-spreading infection, alertness has been raised globally.
What the emergency means
A "public health emergency of international concern" is the WHO's highest alert level. The declaration paves the way for rapid deployment of resources, vaccines, and medical teams to the affected region, and boosts coordination between countries.
