Guwahati, May 12. Following the BJP's third consecutive win in Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma was sworn in as Chief Minister at the Veterinary College Field in Guwahati at 11:40 am on Tuesday. It is his second consecutive term.

Oath taken before high-profile guests

The oath was administered by Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah attended, along with most BJP-ruled state chief ministers. Eighteen new cabinet ministers were also sworn in alongside Sarma.

75 of 126 seats

In results declared on May 4, the BJP-led NDA won 75 seats in the 126-member Assam Assembly. It is the alliance's third consecutive win in the state. The Congress-AIUDF alliance was restricted to around 45 seats.

Sarma's "development plus identity" model

Political analysts attribute Sarma's popularity to a dual approach — infrastructure and investment on one hand, and a hardline stance on citizenship and infiltration on the other. The previous term saw investments worth over ₹50,000 crore flow into the state.

Second-term agenda

Speaking to reporters after the ceremony, Sarma said his government's priorities include flood control, transport infrastructure, tea-garden reforms, expansion of higher education, and Northeast connectivity. He reiterated a promise of three new bridges over the Brahmaputra.

What's next

The new cabinet's first meeting has been called for Tuesday afternoon, with several major policy decisions expected. BJP sources say Sarma's term will serve as a model for the party in the Northeast ahead of the 2029 general elections.
