Chicago, May. An encouraging advance has emerged in the treatment of diabetes. In an early clinical trial at the University of Chicago, all 10 initial participants with Type 1 diabetes saw extraordinary results.
Insulin-free in four weeks
According to the trial, all these patients became fully insulin-independent within just four weeks of treatment, with bloodwork returning to that of a non-diabetic person. Notably, many of them had lived with Type 1 diabetes for an average of 33 years.
Why it matters
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition in which the body all but stops producing insulin, leaving patients dependent on insulin injections for life. The prospect of freedom from insulin could therefore be life-changing news for millions of patients.
