New Delhi, May. An intriguing piece of research has emerged in mental health that could open new possibilities for the early detection of depression.

A clue in the blood

According to a new study, depression may in future be identified through a simple blood test. Researchers found that tracking how certain immune cells "age" can reveal signals associated with depression.

Why it matters

Depression is usually diagnosed based on symptoms and psychological assessment, which can be subjective. Finding an objective biological marker (biomarker) could allow earlier and more accurate detection of the illness, enabling timely treatment.

A note of caution

Experts caution that this is still early-stage research and must go through broader clinical trials. Even so, it is an encouraging step toward measuring mental health as objectively as physical health. Experts believe such research could improve both treatment and awareness of depression in the years ahead.
