Moscow/Kyiv, May. Diplomatic efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war continue, but a clear gap remains between the two countries' positions on a ceasefire.

Competing announcements

Russia's Ministry of Defence had declared a ceasefire on May 8-9, in line with a decision by President Vladimir Putin. Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, however, said he had received no official notice from Russia, and announced a separate ceasefire from midnight on May 5.

Rounds of peace talks

Renewed negotiations began in 2025 after a change of administration in the United States. So far, though, the two sides have not agreed on the proposed plans, and Russia has repeatedly rejected calls for a ceasefire.

Ukraine's conditions

Ukraine has reiterated that it supports a lasting ceasefire and a peace settlement backed by security guarantees. Analysts believe the path to durable peace will remain difficult until both sides agree on concrete guarantees and terms.
