New Delhi, May. The severe heat across the plains has pulled tourists toward the cool valleys of the mountains. Hill-station tourism is booming in the summer of 2026.

Favourite destinations

This year's most popular hill stations include Manali, Shimla, Munnar, Ooty, Darjeeling, and Leh-Ladakh. Srinagar — famous for Dal Lake, the Mughal Gardens, and houseboats — also remains a top pick for travellers.

Changing travel trends

Today's Indian travellers are prioritising experiences over material spending — demand for wellness retreats, adventure tourism, and time in nature has risen sharply. Budget travel is also gaining ground; the Himalayas, Western Ghats, and Northeast have over 18 hill stations with stays available for under Rs 2,500 a night.

Impact on the industry

Occupancy at hotels, resorts, and homestays has risen sharply, while airlines are adding new domestic routes and flights to tourist hotspots. Tourism boards are promoting sustainable travel — reduced plastic use, support for local communities, and environmental protection — to keep mountain ecosystems safe.
