Guwahati, May 4. In the 2026 Assam Assembly election results, the BJP-led NDA won 75 of 126 seats to form the government for the third consecutive time. Himanta Biswa Sarma was sworn in as Chief Minister on May 12.

"Development + identity" twin pitch

Over the past five years, the Sarma government attracted over ₹50,000 crore in investment, expanded higher education, and improved flood management. Politically, it also pursued the citizenship and infiltration issue assertively.

Opposition shrinks

The Congress-AIUDF alliance was restricted to 45 seats — fewer than in the previous election. Despite the Tarun Gogoi family legacy and Gaurav Gogoi's campaign, the Congress could not even hold on to its traditional tea-garden seats.

Big boost in Rajya Sabha

Results in five states declared on May 4 — West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam, and Puducherry — have shifted the Rajya Sabha balance. The BJP and allies are now close to a two-thirds majority.

Lok Sabha still a hurdle

However, the two-thirds Lok Sabha majority needed for major constitutional reforms remains out of reach. In the 2024 general elections, the BJP fell short of a single-party majority and continues to rely on NDA partners.

New cabinet's agenda

Sarma's new cabinet has 18 ministers. The first meeting prioritised flood control, three new bridges over the Brahmaputra, and tea-garden reforms.
