Chennai, May 4. The 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election has upended a six-decade-old political pattern. Actor Vijay's new party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) created history by winning 108 of 234 seats.
End of the Dravidian era
The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) got around 59 seats and the AIADMK was reduced to about 53. Tamil Nadu has been ruled exclusively by the DMK or AIADMK since 1967. The TVK win is the most significant rupture in the state's Dravidian politics in that period.
Record 85.1% turnout
According to the Election Commission, turnout was 85.1% — the highest in Tamil Nadu's history. Heavy participation from young voters was visible across both urban and rural areas. Chennai, Coimbatore, and Madurai districts crossed 90%.
Stalin's defeat
Outgoing Chief Minister M.K. Stalin lost his traditional Kolathur seat — one he had won three consecutive times. Stalin's defeat is a major blow at the very top of the DMK.
